Opatija
Opatia is a small pictoresque town positioned in the Kvarner Gulf, on the eastern coast of Istrian peninsula, lying at the foot of the mountain Učka. Politicaly, it is a part of the Primorsko-goranska county. It has a rich history and culture, many fantastic locations, impressive monuments, well-manicured parks and magnificent villas that are waiting to be discovered.
Famous by its austro-hungarian villas, nature, parks, promenades and beaches, it is a town of long touristic tradition. Today, Opatija is one of the most important points on the touristic map of Croatia, offering contents during the entire year. It is popular as an ideal cogress, seminar and conference destination, attracting visitors during the summer and the winter thanks to its mild, mediteranean climate.
Opatija has lots to offer: an impressive church in the centre of town, the fantastic Villa Angiolina with its park, statues made by renowned artists, and much more. Take a walk along the enchanting Lungomare coastal promenade, visit the Open Air theatre – the venue of many musical spectacles. One of the most popular symbols of Opatija is the monument “Girl with the seagull” made by the sculptor Zvonko Car and installed by the sea in 1956.
By the results of the census made in 2011. the Town of Opatija has 11.759 inhabitants on the area of 54 km2.
